Children's Classes and Pre-Professional Training

Island Dance studio has classes for children beginning at age three.

Our Focus at IDS is on patient, careful instruction tailored to the potential and the steady development of each dancer. This enables each student to build self esteem, confidence, and a lasting appreciation of dance.

photoBallet Classes

  • Using both the Cecchetti and Royal Academy of Dancing methods, highly qualified and experienced teachers provide instruction from pre-ballet to professional.
  • Our youngest dancers (3 years old) get a chance to experience dance classes in a fun and supportive environment along with a parent in our newest class: Me and Mum or Dad. Here their natural dance abilities can flourish as they are encouraged to express themselves and get to learn new ways to move and enjoy music. Mum or Dad get the unique opportunity to be a part of their child's first dance class experience and share in the fun!
  • At four years of age, dancers are enrolled in our Pre-Ballet class. These classes concentrate on the development of gross motor skills, coordination, musicality, and self-expression. As their strength develops, students move on to more technical classes which include syllabus and unset classes.
  • IDS is also pleased to now offer Adult Ballet for those who have always wanted to start and for those who never want to stop!
  • Examinations, on the recommendation of the Director, are an integral part of the ballet program.
  • Participation in pointe work is by the Director's approval once the student has gained sufficient strength and technique and demonstrates the correct postural alignment needed for these classes.
  • Piano accompaniment is an essential component of ballet training and is provided for all ballet classes.

Jazz Classes

  • For all ballet students 11 years of age older, we offer Jazz classes that explore a range of styles from classical to contemporary and commercial.

Modern and Contemporary Classes

  • Older students (14 years and over) have the option of studying various modern dance techniques, including improvisation.
